I have a BA in Dramatic Arts and an MA in Creative writing, as well as being a published author. I find this a great advantage when teaching.
Ofsted observed that, ‘Teachers who were confident as writers themselves, and who could demonstrate how writing is composed, taught it effectively.’ (English at the Crossroads)
I’ve been able to help many students:
- Students who need last-minute exam coaching
- Students who have become dispirited and lost their enthusiasm for English
- Students who are struggling to achieve the grades they want
- Students who have potential that is not being realised
- Excluded students who have lost faith with the educational process
My approach is always to treat the student with kindness and respect and to provide a safe and friendly atmosphere where learning can take place. My aim is also to make it fun – the last thing most students want is more school!
I can quickly gauge where the student’s ‘gaps’ in knowledge or application are and devise ways to help them strengthen their approach.
